What is language localization?

Posted in Home Page Display, Language Industry Stuff

Here we will talk about what language localization is, and why we need it.

What is language localization?

Localization is not the same as just translating. It is a process of adapting a product or service to new markets, taking into consideration not only its translation, but also cultural differences, traditions, history, modern slang and local sense of humor.

Who does really need localization services?

Companies that want to sell their products/services to new markets are among those who need localization services the most. Today, software or website localization services as well as application localization services are among the most popular.

The aim of localization is to bring the product to a new market as if it has been created for the target audience, and to eliminate possible language and perception sensitivities.

Why do you need localization?

Website localization

It’s likely that you will need localization to reach a wider audience and increase sales. Look at the most famous international companies – Apple, Coca-Cola, Airbnb or booking.com –they all have official websites in different languages.

App localization

As Tim Cook declared at WWDC 2014, there are more than 1.2 million applications in the App Store, and only few of them are localized into different languages. But the App Store is a cross-national digital distribution platform that allows users from all over the world to download and buy applications.

More and more studies show the positive impact of application localization, which often results in an increased number of downloads. According to the Q1 2015 Market Index, China has become №1 in iOS downloads surpassing US users for the first time in Apple history. Just imagine how many downloads you could get if your game was localized into Chinese.

Software localization

With your software localized, you can reach a global audience. Software localization means the process of translating and adapting not only texts, but also the user interface, functions, graphic elements and documentation to the target market. Remember that the best way to capture the audience is to present the product in their native language.

Marketing campaign localization

As you can read in the previous article, history shows us the unfortunate results of the poor translation of a company’s slogan. To avoid these mistakes, turn to professional translation services.

So, if you are ready to open new borders, think over the importance of language localization.
